Programming notes:
Below is every movie released in 2024 that I saw, ranked in order of how likely I’d be to recommend them to someone. There’s a couple movies I haven’t seen yet but may have been worthy of high ranking, like The Brutalist, Babygirl, Sing Sing, and Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (kidding).
Entries below are linked to my full write-up from earlier this year. In parenthesis is where you can watch the movie, if you’re interested. “VOD” stands for “video on-demand,” meaning you can rent it on a service like Amazon Prime or Apple.
I crammed in four releases this past week before the deadline, so the write-ups for Nosferatu, Kneecap, Nickel Boys and A Complete Unknown will be in this week’s Friday newsletter. I’ll mark those with a double asterisk ** below.
Every year I put the rankings list into “tiers,” which should make it easier to compare between years and help differentiate between movies that are probably just as good as something ranked a dozen spots higher.
Overall, I’d have to call this a weak movie year. The strength of a given year is always going to be judged by the movies at the very top, and looking back at 2023, you could make a case that any of my top EIGHT movies from last year could have been No. 1 on this year’s list. Anyone who read my initial review of Dune 2 in March definitely didn’t expect it to be one of my best of the year, I can promise you that! Anyway, without further ado here’s the rundown:
