Pennies on the outs and priests on acid
Here's the best things I found on the internet in the past week!
What’s up friends,
I’m still buzzing coming back from Oklahoma City, where I saw my Thunder win Game 2 of the NBA Finals. This is our year.
But I’ve got to get back into the swing of things here on the west coast, which has meant a lot of reading, watching and listening today. And as always, the internet delivered. Here are my weekly “conversation starters,” the best of the best of the best of the internet from the past week. Hope you enjoy and share!
What’s the coolest story or thing you found on the internet this week? Reply to this email and shoot me a link. Would love to hear from you!
I had THREE stories up on Forbes this past week (deep breaths). The first two are Forbes classics: America’s richest female celebrities and the WNBA team that became the league’s most valuable before it played a single game. The third story is one I’m proud of — Why Hollywood stars like George Clooney are redefining the Broadway landscape (and not making much money doing it).
I also chatted about that Broadway story on Forbes Talks if you want to watch!
And while we’re at it, I did a Forbes Talks discussion about my JK Rowling billionaire story from last week.
Speaking of Broadway, if you didn’t see the 10-year anniversary performance with the original cast of “Hamilton” during Sunday night’s Tony Awards…it will give you chills. Unbelievable to think how far each of them have come in their careers (consider for a second that Arianna Dubose, who plays “The Bullet” with no speaking lines, now has an Oscar) — and they all clearly still have the juice as our founding fathers.
Awesome Job Alert: Apply to be Starbucks “Global Coffee Creator.” Two will be chosen to travel the world and post about it on Starbucks social channels.
Remember last year when I shared with you all the incredible deep dive magazine story about the abomination that is the penny? Well it looks like the U.S. is FINALLY planning to end production of the one-cent coin over the next few months, phasing out the worthless and costly currency.
If the future of content is these one-minute, vertical-shot soap operas that are exploding in popularity (after already conquering the Chinese market), then I may have to shut down my newsletter completely. I want no part of that engagement baiting world, even if it is keeping a lot of L.A. actors employed during the Hollywood slow-down.
Weirdly, we’ve done a lot of etymology content on here recently…not sure why, but I found it super interesting to learn where all of the most eye-roll worthy corporate jargon comes from.
Some 30 religious leaders participated in a study in which they tried psychedelic drugs for the first time — 96% rated their first encounters with psilocybin as being among the top five most spiritually significant experiences of their lives. Wild story from the New Yorker.
Thanks for reading and sharing! We’ve got Wes Anderson’s new movie The Phoenician Scheme and as well as HBO Max’s Mountainhead on deck for Friday, talk to ya then!
