My Fourth Annual Oscars Picks Pool
I had a blast running my Oscars pool again this year, thank you to the 36 people who entered. As I mentioned, the prize is $2 times the number of entries, so $72 … AND a free Cinephile Bucket List (if you’d like one). Before we announce the winners, here are a few fun facts from the ballots.
The most watched Best Picture movie this year was Barbie, no surprise, with 28 out of 36 people seeing it. Oppenheimer followed close behind with 27, then Killers of the Flower Moon with 22. The least watched movies? Only 5 of you watched The Zone of Interest, and only 8 saw Maestro.
There actually was some correlation this year between watching the movies and making the correct picks. The top four finishers watched an average of 8.75 of the 10 Best Picture nominees, and the bottom four finishers watched an average of 4 of them. It’s not too late to watch the movies!
Last year’s champion, who entered this year only as “Reigning Champ,” finished tied for 11th place and will be eating humble pie for the next 12 months.
Oppenheimer was the Best Picture choice on more than 86% of ballots. The rest of you…I love you, but you are not serious people.
The shocker of the night was Best Sound. ZERO people in the entire pool picked The Zone of Interest there. Over 77% of you (including myself) picked Oppenheimer.
In the showdown for Best Actress, almost 70% of us went for Lily Gladstone, and were dead wrong. Emma Stone was the choice for the wiser 25%.
Shoutout to the one person who voted for Bradley Cooper for Best Actor, who was also the only one to vote Maestro for Best Picture. I think you owe it to the eight of us who saw the movie (and the others who didn’t) to tell us what we’re missing there.
And the No Content For Old Men Oscars pool prize goes to … Paul C.! An impressive 21 of 23 correct answers. He is not a newsletter subscriber, so I am giving him until Thursday night to claim the $72 and Cinephile Bucket List.
Paul, if you’re reading this, the way to claim the prize will be to reply to this email with a brief acceptance speech (1-2 sentences is fine)…brag, trash talk, whatever you want to do.
For those who are in the three-way tie for second place, please send in your claim/speech as well. If Paul C. drops out, you will awarded. The official winner will be locked in with Friday morning’s newsletter.
