Meet the nannies in Florida making more money than us
Here's the best things I found on the internet this week!
What’s up fellow citizens of the internet,
Looks like you all went out to your local movie theater this weekend finally, like I keep saying you should! Sinners had the second lowest box office drop in week two of any movie OF ALL TIME behind tiny little indie called Avatar in 2009. Now it’s not just a good movie, it’s a genuine hit. As I wrote on Friday, Ryan Coogler definitely belongs in the modern filmmaker pantheon.
Meanwhile on the internet, content keeps coming in at its furious, chaotic pace. The goal of my “conversation starters” are to sort out for your the best, most interesting and most entertaining content you may have missed among the deluge. Hope you can take some time to read, watch, enjoy and share!

Speaking of Sinners, I was fascinated to read the New York Times’ walk through movie history of how one actor can play two or more roles in a movie. The technology has changed a little from Buster Keaton through to Michael B. Jordan, to say the least.
Our Long Read of the Week sounds like a silly premise but touches on many larger more fascinating economic trends — meet the nannies and housekeepers making $150,000 a year in Palm Beach, via the New Yorker.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new championship belt holder in the worldwide competition for worse use case of artificial intelligence: an AI generate voice that calls your elderly parents, holds a conversation, then produces a summary for you, complete with a report on whether they’re in a bad mood. Perhaps because they wanted to talk to their child and got an AI instead?? This is dystopian and insulting.
Want to know one way to fight back? Keep saying please and thank you to ChatGPT, which OpenAI founder Sam Altman is costing the company millions of dollars in energy costs.
Another sign of the apocalypse — according to a new survey, 38% of young adults (ages 18-34) said they've ignored their medical provider in favor of advice from social media. And 45% of young adults say the average person can know as much about health matters as trained doctors.
A Kenyan woman will attempt to become the first ever to break the four-minute mile barrier — and can do it only because of recent massive advancements in racing shoe technology.
Cardio is out and weightlifting is in at gyms nationwide, reports Bloomberg. Many facilities are swapping out treadmills for squat racks, thanks primarily to an influx of new female and older gym-goers increasingly prioritizing weight training. This story dovetails nicely with one I highlighted a few weeks ago about the country’s new protein mania.
“Dude…bikes are better than therapy now!” Online creator Eli Leonard is my latest incredibly niche Instagram comedy obsession.
Thanks for reading and sharing! I’ll be back on Friday to talk about The Accountant 2 and hope the movie momentum can continue!
