Mark Zuckerberg, Tua Tagovailoa and Dua Lipa walk into a newsletter...
These are the best things I found on the internet this week!
Hello internet explorers,
Pretty great week in my newsletter world. Just watched a movie that is my new No. 1 for the year, my Dodgers are up 3-0 in the World Series, my OKC Thunder are 3-0 in the NBA season, and I have at least one more week before all hell breaks loose on Election Day.
Just enough time to squeeze in another edition of my “conversation starters,” a roundup of the best, most interesting and most entertaining content on the internet from the past week. You know the drill…read, watch, enjoy, spread the word!
What’s the coolest story or thing you found on the internet this week? Reply to this email and shoot me a link. Would love to hear from you!
Since I missed last week I never got to shout out my spot on “Good Morning America” talking about Diddy. I also worked on Forbes’ annual list of Top Creators, specifically all the videogames creators.
Season ticket alert! New York Mag’s Reeves Wiedman writes about Tua Tagovailoa’s return after multiple concussions, which signals the country’s seeming acceptance of and indifference toward obvious brain trauma risk in the sport. Fascinating, haunting story. Basically everything Wiedman writes ends up as our Long Read of the Week.
The industry of Halloween is crazy to me. For one month a year every empty store becomes a costume shop, every parking lot a pumpkin patch, every park a haunted hayride. Millions and millions of dollars, then poof. It’s packed up and gone. Here’s how one haunted house in NYC makes a year’s income in 21 nights.
This is a month old, but I found this longform conversation between Mark Zuckerberg and Cleo Abram about the future of AR, VR and AI. I’m honestly still kind of freaked out by Zuck’s millennial glow up with the baggy shirts and the gold chains, but he’s one of the most influential people on the future he’s talking about so his insights carry a lot of weight.
You may have heard once or twice…the election is ONE WEEK AWAY. If you’re like me, you can’t wait for it to be over. The Wall Street Journal says that could be because the process is now two years of prolonged bombardment, with $15.9 billion in spending on federal elections this cycle, more than triple what elections cost 20 years ago. Nowhere else in the world does this!
What happens when a hurricane relief effort in North Carolina turns out to be an anti-government conspiracy group steeped in conspiracy theories? The Washington Post goes inside the chaos that bad actors are trying to take advantage of.
Here’s an actual sign that hangs at an airport on the South Island of New Zealand: “Max hug time 3 minutes // For fonder farewells please use the car park.”
Dua Lipa on Tiny Desk this week. You’re welcome.
Thanks for reading and sharing! Here’s a tease for you…on Friday’s movie edition I’ll be unveiling a new No. 1 movie of 2024 for me!
