How do people afford to live in New York? Daddy's money
Here's the best things I found on the internet this week!
What’s up everybody,
Going to be a shorter Tuesday edition this week. The Super Bowl sucked up all of the cultural zeitgeist, and there are plenty of other places where you can find a roundup of top commercials and highlight plays (to be fair, not a lot of highlights after the middle of the second quarter…).
Anyway, these are just a handful of great reads I had this week after a little shameless self-promotion off the top. Thanks for indulging me. Have a great week.
What’s the coolest story or thing you found on the internet this week? Reply to this email and shoot me a link. Would love to hear from you!
As I announced last week, my very first Forbes print cover story came out online — and will be on shelves very soon. It’s a profile of Dana White, CEO of the UFC and close personal friend to Donald Trump, a man at the center of this country’s hyper-masculinity movement. (As always, if you want to read but are hitting the paywall, email reply to this)
In addition to the magazine feature on Dana White, we put together a 35-minute documentary version of the story, which includes some pretty crazy scenes of me with White at the high stakes baccarat table, walking beside him in the ring walk and sitting ringside for a UFC fight. A surreal experience and a story I’m very proud of.
Regular Tuesday readers know one of my hobby horses is taking technology out of schools (and society more broadly). Are Yondr pouches the solution? Maybe not, says New York Mag, which reports on children bypassing the rules and school districts wasting money on them. But hey whatever method schools settle on, I’m not seeing any evidence where less phones in schools is a bad thing!! This deep dive is our Long Read of the Week.
New studies suggest that the age-old treatment methods for minor injuries like a sprained ankle — rest, ice, compression, elevation — might actually delay healing. Now doctors and physical therapists are focusing on controlled movement as soon as possible. My whole life was a lie!!
Ever heard the saying, “nobody can afford to live in New York City, but somehow eight million people do.” Well New York Mag confirmed an answer that I knew anecdotally to be true — some high percentage of young New Yorkers are subsidized by their Boomer parents. The biggest wealth transfer in the country’s history is keeping its biggest city afloat.
Have you heard about surveillance pricing? Insane. Companies are using your search history to up-sell you on products they know you can’t do without. Here are five useful and practical ways to avoid being microtargeted by shopping sites.
Thanks for reading and sharing! We’ll be back with movie talk (and Oscar talk!) on Friday.
