Dating is 40% more expensive than a decade ago
Here's the best things I found on the internet this week!
What's up everybody!
It's getting to be that time of year when the only thing you can find on the internet are versions of "the best ____ of 2022," which is fun for about one day before getting really annoying. I offer you an antidote! This is the best, most interesting and most entertaining content I found on the internet this past week. Enjoy!
THE CINEPHILE BUCKET LIST
Time is running out to order my Cinephile Bucket List in time for Christmas. It's a great way to support this newsletter, while also getting a cool scratch-off poster with my 100 best movie recommendations. FULL DETAILS
What’s the coolest story or thing you found on the internet this week? Reply to this email and shoot me a link. Would love to hear from you.
The internet got obsessed this week with a 1973 Martin Scorcese movie called Goncharov that didn’t actually exist (s/o to my friend Allison for sending to me!). Fans came up with a cast, a poster and a soundtrack. The post went so viral Scorcese himself saw it and responded, in hilarious fashion.
I think the graph below can explain a lot of the problems with “society” these days. Surges in anxiety and depression, the polarization of politics, the rise of extremism…is it as simple as humans needing more time with other humans? The Washington Post stops short of saying that loneliness is destroying America, but after reading all the stats, that’s my takeaway.
Here’s a headline I know some people can relate to: It's now 40% more expensive to be single and dating than it was a decade ago. Maybe that’s why we’re spending so much time alone…
This week’s Long Read Of The Week is a wild one — a journalist follows a tip about a supposed billionaire sex trafficker only to find that he was being long-conned by a fraudulent business partner. The details are so crazy you wouldn’t even believe them in a fictional movie. Great stuff in New York Mag’s Intelligencer.
New policies at Air India will require flight attendants to die their gray hair, wear two coats of nail polish, use a watch with a second hand, and use good posture, among other outrageous requirements meant to restore the brand’s “premium” image.
The Brown University baseball team has officially rostered the first female Division I baseball player in history. She’s got a great résumé.
Cashmere sweaters used to be $5,000. Now you can find them for $50. Is the cashmere industry a scam? This Twitter thread explains why Mongolia, global warming and fiber thickness account for the difference in quality. Fascinating deep dive on an obscure topic.
This isn’t new content, but my friend Justin turned me on to this free documentary about one of the most extreme sporting events I’ve ever seen - The Barkley Marathons. It’s basically a 100-mile hike through thorn-infested hills across three days with no sleep. Only 11 people have ever actually finished in across decades of competition. I’m not sure why anyone would attempt it.
After a Broadway performance of “The Music Man,” Hugh Jackman auctioned off his hat for charity. A mystery woman in the audience bid $100,000. When she came forward, the crowd saw that it was Nicole Kidman, and lost their minds cheering. What a cool moment.
