Doritos nacho cheese liquor, the home of lost airline luggage, and the YouTuber who crashed a plane for the clicks
Here's the best things I found on the internet this week!
Happy New Years friends!
It’s the time of year when we’re all reflecting and planning what we want to do with our lives…or at least, with our newsletters. My plan is to continue to put out my weekly “conversation starters,” the roundup of the best, most interesting and most entertaining content on the internet, every Tuesday (err, except today’s, which was delayed because of the holiday).
Let me know if you’re enjoying checking them out, and if Tuesday morning is the best day for it. This is the time of year when I’m open to suggestions and could change almost anything!
What’s the coolest story or thing you found on the internet this week? Reply to this email and shoot me a link. Would love to hear from you!
A thought we’ve probably all wondered at least once — does taking your shoes off at the door REALLY make a difference? Turns out, according to this CNN story, taking your shoes off at the door makes a huge difference when it comes to health. But I’ll admit, I can’t quite get on board with the in-house slippers thing either.
I’ve never respected Taylor Swift more than when I read this story of an ultrarunner trying T-Swift’s workout, and getting absolutely wrecked by it. Three hours straight on the treadmill while singing at the top of your lungs? No thank you.
In previous newsletters I’ve mentioned about the rich guy spending all his money to try to live forever, including radical treatments, diet and testing. If his lifestyle doesn’t sound all that hospitable to companionship, his former fiancée might now agree with you. She’s suing him after he broke up with her and fired her while she was recovering from breast cancer. You either die an internet meme or live long enough to see yourself get cancelled (looking at you, Ken Bone).
Airlines only lose about 0.5% of all bags, but in the aggregate that’s a TON of luggage. What happens to airline luggage after it’s permanently lost? It goes to a giant warehouse outside of Atlanta, a 50,000 square foot treasure chest of every single thing you can imagine. And they’re selling it all at deep discounts.
Headlines That Require No Context: A YouTuber has been jailed for six months for deliberately crashing his plane for views, and then lying about it to US investigators.
In an era of gimmicky marketing crossovers, it’s not necessarily surprising to find out that a Doritos nacho cheese liquor exists. The stunner is that experts are saying it’s actually really good.
CineFix’s video of the top 10 movies of the year might be the best recap of the year in cinema that exists on the internet.
Every sports fan knows about the bromance at the center of ESPN’s College Gameday, between Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit. The details in this GQ story will leave even the most cynical reader deep in their feels.
The moment I started seeing tip screens pop up on online purchases for clothing, it became clear to me that tipping had gone too far. The Wall Street Journal is tracking the “tipping backlash” that’s beginning to appear.
Thanks for reading and sharing! For Friday’s movie edition I’m going to be wrapping up the themes and lessons learned from 2023 in movies.
