The funny thing about Amazon Prime Video is that it feels both irrelevant and also inevitable. The hits on the service are very far from monocultural juggernauts — “The Boys,” “Fallout,” “Jack Reacher” — yet the service has achieved massive scale thanks to the fact that it came gratis with the thing everyone was already subscribed to for two-day shipping. The company’s content spend is a rounding error in its overall budget.

Because of the heft of the company behind it, Amazon is considered one of the projected survivors of the long-predicted Great Contraction, this next phase in entertainment that comes after the Streaming Wars wind down. Basically, I can tell you with some measure of confidence that Amazon Prime Video will still exist in five or 10 years, a thing I couldn’t say about Max, Peacock, Paramount+ or even AppleTV+.

As a service currently, Amazon’s library feels very normie. It might have the most great movies per capita of any streamer, way more than I was expecting to find — especially if you’re a big fan of movies from the 80s and 90s, like I am — but the caveat is it’s stuff that’s obvious and if you’re any sort of movie fan you’ve probably seen before.

The following streaming guide is meant to go a little bit deeper than these obvious selections. I’m hoping that most of the movies (and the one show) on here are things you haven’t seen, and in a lot of cases haven’t even heard of, so you can discover something new that you love.

As with all these guides, I’m utilizing all of the 1000+ movie suggestions I’ve made over the past six years in my Friday edition of the newsletter, giving you the best of the best.

Much like my Cinephile Bucket List, I’ve broken these down into categories that should help you to browse depending on the vibe you’re looking for on a given night, with blurbs both new and old like a sales pitch to convince you to try out movies you’ve hopefully never seen before.

These guides will be updated regularly on a rolling basis. Next week I’ll have one for Hulu, and unless there is demand for other services, I’ll probably cycle back to Netflix at the start of next month as titles shuffle on and off the platform.

Without further ado, here’s my first Amazon Prime Video Streaming Guide!
