Trying out a new twist on my premium recommendations edition of the newsletter, picking out a genre and giving you some titles across all of the streaming services for it.

Here’s the plan: two movies from five of the major streamers (Netflix, Amazon, Max, Peacock, Hulu). Let me know what you think!

And we’re starting out with action movies, specifically because it’s a genre that has gotten flattened by the rise of superhero movies (with their commitment to CGI punchfest “action”) or other big budget blockbusters that need to sanitize everything to appeal to the widest possible audience (, or add in constant jokes that relieve the tension, or fold the action into another genre like sci-fi, thriller or comedy. John Wick is the exception that proves the rule here, because can you name another big example recently? (Honorable mention for Civil War…but no).

Meanwhile, the streaming libraries have capitalized on the fact that people are hungry for action content — after all, few experiences hit harder than an action movies that’s an absolute ripper — by flooding the zone with low budget B-movies.

You know the type. They’re usually starring Liam Neeson, Sly Stallone, late-stage Bruce Willis (RIP), or Samuel L. Jackson (and a lot of them are financed by BondIt Media, a company I profiled for Forbes!). Some of them are fine and even fun but none are super memorable.

So I’m diving back into my catalog of more than 1,000 movie recommendations over the past (almost) seven years of running this newsletter to find 10 movies that I can guarantee you will all get your heart pumping (and probably your fist too, in celebration).
